Seiko Seikomatic-R – Ref. 8306-8001 – April 1966 – early automatic from Seiko's development phase

The Seiko Seikomatic-R offered here, from April 1966, is one of those models with which Seiko systematically transitioned from a solid everyday manufacturer to a serious competitor to the Swiss industry in the 1960s. The reference 8306-8001 is exemplary of this phase: technically mature, clearly designed, and already positioned significantly above the basic models of the time.

The Seikomatic line was developed by Suwa Seikosha and represented the premium automatic class within the Seiko portfolio. It bundled the most modern solutions in automatic winding, everyday usability, and wearing comfort. The later rivalry between Suwa (including Seikomatic) and Daini (including King Seiko) famously led to internal competition, ultimately paving the way for Grand Seiko. The Seikomatic-R should therefore not be viewed in isolation, but as part of this very development line – a true "Pre-Grand-Seiko" watch.

Inside, the proven caliber 8306, an automatic movement with 30 jewels and day-date function, is at work. These movements are designed for longevity and are considered exceptionally robust. Unlike many purely elegant dress watches of the time, the Seikomatic-R was deliberately conceived as a reliable everyday watch – technically sophisticated, but without unnecessary complexity.

In terms of design, the watch is typical of the mid-1960s: a silver sunburst dial, applied indices with clear facets, and slim hands create a very balanced, calm appearance. The day-date window harmoniously integrates into the overall picture and underlines the functional claim of the watch.

The condition is generally good. The case shows the usual age-appropriate signs of wear, without losing its clean lines. The dial shows a slight, even patina that suits its age well and does not appear distracting. Hands and indices are well preserved. The watch is equipped with a new leather strap that stylistically fits the era very well. The total weight is a light 47 g, which makes the watch exceptionally comfortable to wear on the wrist.

Particularly in Europe, well-preserved Seikomatic-R models are much rarer than in Japan. Against this background, the watch offers not only historical and technical appeal, but also a certain degree of collector's attractiveness – especially for connoisseurs of early Seiko automatic development.
