Seiko Sportsmatic 5 Deluxe - Caliber 7606, Day-Date (March 1964)
Seiko Sportsmatic 5 Deluxe - Caliber 7606, Day-Date (March 1964)
This Seiko Sportsmatic 5 Deluxe dates from the early heyday of the Japanese automatic era and is in an exceptionally appealing condition. The silver-plated sunburst dial with fine, concentric structuring catches the light from every angle, while the applied, faceted and longitudinally divided indices, together with the wide, polished dauphine hands, create that high-quality look that gave the "Deluxe" line its name. At three o'clock is the framed day/date window with English day display.
Inside, the automatic caliber 7606 movement with 23 jewels and Diashock shock protection is at work. Characteristic of the Deluxe models is the quick-set date adjustment via a separate pusher above the crown (the day of the week is corrected by advancing the hands) – a feature that distinguishes this upscale variant from the simpler Sportsmatic.
Historically, the Sportsmatic 5 Deluxe was the upscale culmination of the broad Sportsmatic everyday line. Above it in those years were already the prestige series King Seiko (from 1961) and Grand Seiko (from 1960), which Seiko positioned as a response to Swiss chronometer competition. The Deluxe models adopted much of their design language – faceted indices, sharply drawn hands, careful case finishing – and made this quality feel affordable for a wider audience.
The polished stainless steel case shows the normal, subtle signs of wear for its age; the case back bears the "Waterproof 30" engraving and the Seiko dolphin emblem. The watch comes on a contemporary, articulated aftermarket stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp. The bracelet length is suitable for a wrist circumference of up to approx. 17.5 cm.
