Seiko stopwatch – Ref. 90-5010 – mechanical movement, manual wind – flyback with counter – August 1978 – freshly serviced

There are items you buy not because of their beauty, but because they perform a task perfectly. This stopwatch is one of them.

A chrome-plated case of just under 48 millimeters, a bow with a pusher, a cord for hanging, a white dial – and nothing else. No display, no battery, no beep. You press it, the hand runs. You press it, it stops.

What it was built for

Mechanical stopwatches of this type were standard equipment well into the 1980s: at the poolside, on the track, in P.E. class, in the lab, in production control, and in the doctor’s office for measuring pulse. Seiko was one of the most important suppliers in this market worldwide – the company provided the official timekeeping for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and it built the equipment for it entirely in-house.

The stopwatches from the Seiko program were the civilian consequence of this development: robust, easy-to-read instruments produced in large numbers that remained in use for decades. This is exactly what makes them interesting today, because most of them remained just that – until they stopped at some point and ended up in a drawer.

This one is running again.

The dial

The white dial features a peripheral seconds track with fine graduation, plus two nested sets of numbers: a black one and a red one, each offset by thirty units. The top point shows 60 in black and 30 in red side by side; accordingly, the red 15 stands next to the black 45.

In the upper third of the dial is a sub-dial with the counter hand, also double-numbered – on the outside in black up to 30, on the inside in red up to 15. The red inner graduation is additionally marked with fine crosshairs.

This double numbering is characteristic of Japanese stopwatches of those years and is the reason why the dial looks so dense despite its simplicity. In practice, you only ever read one of the two rows – which one depends on the selected operating mode.

The dial is labeled with the SEIKO logo and the identifier 90-5020T at the bottom edge.

Case and operation

The case is chrome-plated and measures 47.8 mm in diameter and 14 mm in height – dimensions that are important for a stopwatch because it must fit well in the hand and be readable from a distance of one meter.

It is operated via the knurled pusher in the bow: press to start, press to stop, press to reset. The watch is also manually wound using the same button. A simple, entirely mechanical construction with no electronics.

The case back bears the marking ACRP, the reference 90-5010, and the serial number 8802592. Included is the black braided fabric cord, 56 cm in length.

Condition

Technically flawless. The stopwatch was professionally serviced by a watchmaker in Japan in the spring/summer of 2026 – completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled, and regulated. Start, stop, and reset work cleanly.

The dial is very well preserved: uniformly white, the black and red numbering complete and sharp, without spots or discoloration. For a utility instrument of this age, this is not a matter of course.

The chrome-plated case shows signs of wear; the back is covered with fine scratches, though the engravings remain fully legible. There are occasional abrasions on the edges of the case. The crystal is clear.

The fabric cord is intact.
