Seiko Pocket Watch Olympic Winter Games Nagano 1998 – Ref. 7N01-9A00 – unworn with box

An official licensed product of the Nagano Winter Olympics – unworn, with original chain, outer box, instructions and price tag, and with the protective film that Seiko applied to the case back at the time and which has not been removed to this day.

The case back is embossed with SEIKO, BASE METAL, ST. STEEL BACK, the reference 7N01-9A00 and the number 740056. The original protective film is affixed over this, featuring the Nagano emblem, the Olympic rings, the license notice © 1993 NAOC TM, and a Japanese request to remove the film before use.

Nagano 1998 and Seiko

The Nagano Winter Olympics in February 1998 were the third Olympic Games held in Japan. Seiko, associated with the Olympic program as a timekeeper and official outfitter since the 1964 Tokyo Games, released a series of licensed watches that were sold through Japanese retailers.

This pocket watch is part of that series. The accompanying tag explicitly identifies it as an official licensed product of the Nagano Winter Olympics and states a recommended retail price of around 18,500 Yen plus tax.

For collectors, the combination is crucial: Olympic licensed merchandise was purchased, worn, and used in large numbers. Examples that have remained complete and unused—with outer box, instructions, price tag, and unopened case back film—are rare twenty-eight years later.

Design

The case is in a warm gold tone and highly polished, with a narrow, circumferential profiling on the edge, which gives structure to the lid. The bow is at the top, the crown below.

The cream-colored dial is classic and uncluttered: black Arabic numerals in a slender serif font, a fine minute track with hash marks at the edge, matching black hands, and a thin seconds hand. The Seiko lettering is below the 12 o'clock position. Seiko deliberately avoided an Olympic motif on the dial here – the association is made via the case back film, tag, and packaging, while the dial itself remains a classic pocket watch.

Inside, the 7N01 quartz caliber operates with an average monthly deviation of ±15 seconds as specified by the manufacturer. The watch comes with its original gold-colored chain.

Dating

The number 740056 on the case back dates the watch to April 1997 according to the usual Seiko system – approximately ten months before the opening of the Games, which corresponds to the typical lead time for licensed merchandise.

Condition

The watch is unworn. Dial, hands, and crystal are flawless; the case shows no signs of wear or polishing. The protective film on the case back is intact and has not been removed. The gold-colored chain is complete and shows no signs of use.

Included in the scope of delivery are the outer box with golden Nagano imprint, the inner box with blue satin lining, the operating instructions, and the original tag with price and barcode. The outer box shows slight signs of storage.

Please note: The case is made of base metal, only the case back is made of stainless steel. A battery is not included; according to the manufacturer's information on the tag, the battery price was not included in the sales price.
