Seiko Tomony Disney Time "King Louie" Ref. 5000-8000 – Manual Wind – 1970s

One of the more sought-after figures from the Japanese Disney Time series—and one rarely seen offered outside of Japan.

This watch bears the engraving "5000-8000 JAPAN" on the case back and the signature "Disney Time / KING LOUIE" on the dial, alongside the Walt Disney Productions copyright notice. A mechanical hand-wound movement operates beneath the dial.

The "Disney Time" Series

Tomony was a brand for which Seiko manufactured watches outside of its classic range starting in the early 1970s—including the character and licensed models of this series. The references in the 5000 family form the core of this series: round cases of 35 to 36 millimeters with a mechanical hand-wound movement, executed in a whole range of different dial motifs.

King Louie from The Jungle Book is not one of the standard characters within this line. While Mickey Mouse was brought to market in large quantities, the supporting characters of the Disney films appear much less frequently—a circumstance that collectors of the series are well aware of and which drives demand for exactly these versions.

Also noteworthy here is the technical seriousness: a standard-manufactured hand-wound movement from Japanese serial production, not a simplified mechanism.

Design

The dial is silver-brushed and catches the light with a fine sunburst finish. In the center sits the orangutan king in vibrant orange and yellow, with bent legs and an outstretched arm. The arm is not merely drawn: it acts as an indicating element, moving across the dial to point to the respective hour—this exact connection between character and display is where the charm of the series lies.

The black Arabic numerals stand out in high contrast against the light background, complemented by a fine minute track on the edge of the dial. The "Disney Time / KING LOUIE" print is positioned above the figure below the 12, with the Walt Disney Productions copyright notice at the bottom edge of the dial.

The round case is kept simple, with short lugs and a ribbed crown at 3 o'clock. At 38 grams, the watch is very lightweight. It is supplied on a blue-and-yellow striped NATO-style textile strap, which picks up the colors of the dial without giving it a childish appearance.

Dating

The reference 5000-8000 was produced in the 1970s. There is no serial number on this example; therefore, dating it to a specific month using the usual Japanese system is not possible. In addition to the reference, the case back bears the code 92.

Condition

The dial is very well preserved. The colors of the figure are vibrant and unbleached, the sunburst finish of the background is uniform, and there are no spots or yellowing. The lettering and copyright notice are fully legible. The character display and hands are complete.

The domed crystal has been cleaned and is clear, ensuring unimpeded legibility. It shows scratches and a small crack near the edge between 9 and 11 o'clock. We explicitly point this out—a suitable replacement crystal can be sourced, so the condition can be rectified if desired.

The case shows clear scratches on the bezel surface and signs of polishing on the lugs. The case back is slightly scratched and shows swirl marks; the engraving remains fully legible. The crown is firm. The possibly non-original textile strap has been worn and is in good condition, apart from a tear at the end of the strap.
