Seiko Tomony Mickey Mouse Ref. 5000-7000 – Manual Winding – 1970s

The most iconic character watch Seiko ever built – and under the dial, a standard-production mechanical hand-wound movement, not a toy mechanism.

The case back is stamped 5000-7000 JAPAN J along with the identifier 92; the dial is marked "Mickey Mouse" with the Walt Disney Productions licensing notice and bears the identifier JAPAN 50-7050T.

The Tomony Character Watches

Tomony was a brand for which Seiko produced watches outside of its classic range starting in the early 1970s – including character and licensed models, which are now among the most sought-after Japanese collectibles outside of the classic model lines.

The reference 5000-7000 is the most famous in this series: a round case measuring approximately 35 millimeters with a mechanical hand-wound movement, released in several dial variations. The Mickey Mouse version is the icon of the series.

Crucial to its collector value is what is not inside: no quartz movement, no simplified mechanism. It is powered by a standard-production Japanese mechanical hand-wound movement – the same technology that was used in the company's adult models at the time.

Design

The dial is silver with a fine sunburst finish that radiates light from the center. Mickey stands in the classic pose of early animation years in the center of the image, in vibrant red and yellow, with the characteristic white gloves.

The sweeping "Mickey" and "Mouse" lettering flank the figure on the left and right; the licensing notice is printed below. The Arabic numerals are slim and black, with a dot minute track running in between – a design that allows the motif to take center stage without sacrificing readability.

The round case is simple in design, with short lugs and a ribbed crown at 3 o'clock. At 44 grams, the watch is very light. It comes on a new red, white, and blue NATO-style textile strap that picks up the colors of the dial.

Dating

The reference 5000-7000 was manufactured in the 1970s. There is no serial number on this specific piece, so a month-specific date according to the standard Japanese system is not possible.

Condition

The dial is well-preserved: the colors of the figure are vibrant, the sunburst finish is even, and the lettering and licensing notice are completely legible. There are occasional fine signs of wear in the lower half of the dial. The hands are complete and undamaged.

The crystal has several scratches, more noticeable in the area between 8 and 9 o'clock as well as below the 6; no cracks or chips are visible. The chrome-plated case shows surrounding signs of wear and polishing. The crown is significantly corroded and has lost its original surface – it remains functional, but is visually the weakest point of the watch. A suitable replacement can be sourced. The case back has light scratches while the engraving remains fully legible. The textile strap is new and unworn.
