Seikomatic – the name is a portmanteau of "Seiko" and "automatic," and around 1960, it was a promise. At the time, automatic winding was considered high-tech, and Seiko built an entire line around it for the modern employee. This first-generation example comes with a "tropical dial" that has matured over six decades and includes verified proof of service from Japan.
The first Seikomatic generation
Seiko's first fully in-house automatic movement was the 1959 Gyro Marvel, developed from the manual-wind Marvel. The caliber 603 followed a year later, bringing with it the Seikomatic line—Seiko's entry into the series production of automatic watches, positioned between their everyday models and the newly created Grand Seiko.
The 603 appeared in 1960, initially in a 20-jewel version; variants with 17, 21, and 30 jewels followed. It operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and is a pure automatic movement: it is not designed to be hand-wound. It was later renamed the 6201. For Seiko, this was the movement that brought automatic winding to the mass market.
A characteristic feature of the early Seikomatic is the crown recessed deep into the case at 4 o'clock. The logic behind this was consistent: if a watch winds itself, you don't need to touch it—so the crown disappears from the silhouette and doesn't get caught on your cuff. On the dial, next to the signature, is the small gyro, Seiko’s symbol for automatic winding at the time.
This example bears the case reference J14075. Comparable examples of this reference with the 603 caliber are dated to early 1961.
The Tropical Dial
The originally light-colored dial has taken on a warm, cream-colored tint over the decades. Collectors call such matured dials "tropical," and they are highly sought after: it is the only part of a vintage watch that can neither be replicated nor reordered. Two Seikomatics from the same production year look completely different after sixty years.
On this example, the discoloration is subtle, which actually makes the watch more interesting: it removes the coolness from the clear dial without compromising legibility. The applied indices and lettering remain sharply defined. We are offering an aged original dial in an untreated condition—not restored, not reprinted, not recolored. The product photos are unretouched and were taken without color correction.
Freshly Serviced
The watch was professionally and fully serviced in Japan in early 2026—disassembled, cleaned, oiled, and regulated. For an automatic movement that is sixty years old and cannot be hand-wound, a fresh service is not a luxury, but a necessity.
Design and Character
The dial is strictly structured: slim, applied baton indices with faceted top edges that sharply refract the light, complemented by matching hands and a central second hand. No date, no additional functions—pure time display in the design language of its era.
The polished stainless steel case measures 35.4 mm without the crown and is 9.7 mm high. Notable is the 43.4 mm lug-to-lug distance: the long, wide-set lugs make the watch look significantly larger on the wrist than its diameter suggests, and they also make it sit perfectly on larger wrists. At 36 grams on the new brown Seiko leather strap, it feels as light as air.
Condition
The watch is in an exceptionally good state of preservation for its age, with crisp edges and only minor signs of wear. The watch is delivered on a new brown Seiko leather strap that matches the brownish shimmer of the dial.
Operating note: The 603 caliber cannot be hand-wound. To start the watch, simply give it a gentle shake a few times.
