Rare Pocket Watch from Kyoto – Japanese Pine Trees in Traditional Handicraft (Kyō-Zōgan)

This extraordinary small pocket watch is far more than a timepiece – it is a piece of traditional Japanese design culture from Kyoto.

Crafted in the historic imperial city, this model embraces the characteristic aesthetic of 京象嵌 (Kyō-Zōgan) – a centuries-old technique where precious metals are artfully embedded into a textured surface. In combination with the deep black lacquer, the typical contrast of black and gold emerges, which has always represented Kyoto.

The surrounding motif depicts stylized pine trees – a symbol in Japan for luck, longevity, and strength. The fine, deliberately understated details give the watch a calm, almost meditative aura that clearly distinguishes it from industrially manufactured mass products.
