Vintage King Seiko Chronometer Officially Certified Hi-Beat Ref. 5626-7060 (June 1970) – "56KS" Suwa Manufacture, JCA Certified

This King Seiko Chronometer Officially Certified Hi-Beat Ref. 5626-7060 is a technically and historically exceptional testament from the absolute peak of Japanese watchmaking – a time when Seiko was not only on par with but even superior to the established Swiss manufacturers in several disciplines. It combines three of the most important quality features that Seiko offered in the late 1960s and early 1970s: the King Seiko level of the top vintage line, the official Chronometer Certification from the still young Japan Chronometer Association (JCA), and the in-house Hi-Beat technology with 28,800 vibrations per hour.

About the King Seiko Line and the Historical Daini vs. Suwa Rivalry: King Seiko was created in 1961 as an internal response by the Daini Seikosha manufacture to the Grand Seiko line (1960) introduced shortly before by its sister factory, Suwa Seikosha. Both manufactures were legally independent but belonged to the Seiko holding and were engaged in a decades-long internal competition, consciously cultivated by corporate management, to produce the most precise, beautiful, and technically sophisticated watches. Daini (factories in Kameido, Tokyo) and Suwa (factories in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture) acted in this constellation as two independent "manufactures under one roof" – similar, by European analogy, to how Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe in Switzerland never were. While Grand Seiko was primarily assigned to Suwa in this constellation (and King Seiko originally to Daini), the present Caliber 5626 remarkably broke this separation: the 5626 family is Suwa Seikosha's entry into the King Seiko line and thus Suwa's first modern, mechanically automated top caliber outside the Grand Seiko world – an internal "crossover" that elevated the competition between the two houses to a new level. In the collector's market, this generation is therefore referred to as "56KS" (5 for the caliber family, 6 for the automatic generation, KS for King Seiko).

The Caliber 5626A (1968–approx. 1971, later replaced by the 5626B until approx. 1976) is Suwa's first automatic Hi-Beat caliber with day/date display: 25 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour, quickset for the date, bidirectional automatic winding – a technically extremely sophisticated construction that could easily compete with the top Swiss calibers of the time in terms of robustness and regulation stability. The Hi-Beat frequency of 28,800 vibrations was by no means standard at the time of its market introduction – ETA movements of that era typically ran at 18,000 or 21,600 vibrations – and resulted in a visibly smoother sweep of the seconds hand and significantly higher stability of positional regulation. This is honored on the dial by the characteristic Hi-Beat lightning bolt symbol below the "Hi-Beat" inscription.

The additional designation "Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial is not a marketing flourish but references a concrete institutional achievement: although Seiko had already used the term "Chronometer" internally for its most precise movements in the early 1960s, it had to abandon the designation again in 1966 because no independent certification body recognized by the international CICC (Commission Internationale des Contrôles Chronométriques) existed in Japan. It was not until 1968 that the Japan Chronometer Association (JCA), a CICC-recognized certification authority, was established in Japan, and from that moment on, selected top movements – including a small selection of the 5626 calibers – could again be marked with the designation "Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial. While the regular, non-certified 5626 was regulated to a daily rate of -6 to +9 seconds according to Seiko's in-house "A" classification, the "Chronometer Officially Certified" examples had to adhere to the significantly stricter tolerance of approximately -3 to +5 seconds per day – a level comparable to the Grand Seiko "AA" standard of that time. Due to these higher requirements, chronometer-certified 5626s are significantly rarer than the standard 5626 variants and, accordingly, more sought after by collectors.

The case design of Ref. 5626-7060 is a direct descendant of the "Taro Tanaka Grammar of Design," the design vocabulary established in 1967 with the legendary Grand Seiko 44GS, which remains the authoritative aesthetic benchmark for top Seiko watches to this day. Characteristic features include the sharply edged, highly polished flanks, the contrasting brushed tops, the long, slender lugs, and the fine gold ring around the dial. With a case diameter of 36.5 mm and a height of 9.8 mm, the watch appears very elegant and understated by today's standards – a format that is particularly appreciated as ideally proportioned in the vintage segment. The long, applied baton indexes and the equally applied "SEIKO" and "KS" logos are highly polished and form the optical counterpart to the matte, slightly silvery sunburst dial.

On the case back, you'll find the typical King Seiko markings: "STAINLESS STEEL", "OPEN THRU GLASS PUSH-SET-LEVER PULL STEM WATERPROOF", "5626-7060", the movement number "061301", "JAPAN J", however, the medallion in the center is missing (which is often the case with these models).

Based on the serial number 06xxxx, the production date can be precisely determined: the leading "0" stands for a year ending in 0, the "6" for the month of June. Since caliber 5626A was only introduced in 1968, only June 1970 is possible – meaning the watch comes from the first production phase of the 5626A variant.

Current market development: Prices for vintage King Seiko models from the 56KS family have noticeably increased in recent months, especially in the Japanese domestic market and in the international collector's market – not least because Seiko revived the King Seiko brand as a reissue series in 2020, and the associated marketing echo further fuels interest in the original vintage models. The chronometer-certified variant of Ref. 5626-7060 is one of the most sought-after configurations within the 56KS family.

Condition: The example offered here is in good optical and technical condition with subtle signs of wear on the case, appropriate for its age and use. The dial shows minimal age-related patina on the outer edge of the chapter ring, but the sunburst finish is intact; the applied indexes and logos are complete and sharp; the hands are original; the original "KS"-signed crown is preserved. The movement runs. The watch comes with a new, original Seiko calf leather strap (stamped "SEIKO CALF" on the inside, lug width 18 mm) in dark blue with a crocodile pattern and a Seiko pin buckle – a harmonious and high-quality combination that supports the elegant overall appearance of the watch.

On the European market, the chronometer variant of this reference in this condition and with its original crown is rare to find; most available examples are traded through Japanese or Asian dealers – with corresponding frictions for European buyers (proxy fees, customs clearance, import VAT, no right of return, no warranty). In this respect, this watch, directly available in Frankfurt and offered with full legal warranty, is an attractive alternative for European collectors.

Overall, a mature, historically rich, and aesthetically outstanding vintage King Seiko – ideal for lovers of the 44GS design language, collectors of certified chronometers, and anyone who wants to experience Japanese Hi-Beat mechanics at their mature best.
