Vintage Seiko 5 Actus SS Automatic 23 Jewels Ref. 6106-8420 (November 1970) – JDM, Bilingual Day-Date, Caliber 6106 (61GS-Related Architecture) – Fully Serviced January 2026
This Seiko 5 Actus SS Automatic 23 Jewels Ref. 6106-8420 from November 1970 is an attractive, technically and historically rich piece from the heyday of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Seiko occupied virtually every market segment with its own, clearly positioned model family – from the Seiko 5 mass segment to the premium "5 Actus" variant presented here, the Lord-Matic line, and up to King Seiko and Grand Seiko.
About the Seiko 5 Actus line: The "Actus" family was introduced in 1967 as an upscale extension of the Seiko 5 model series, positioning itself as the technically and aesthetically more sophisticated sister of the standard Seiko 5. While the basic Seiko 5 typically featured the 6119 caliber (17/21 jewels), the Actus received the significantly more complex 6106 caliber with 23 jewels, a more distinctive case design, higher quality dial finishes, and more specific functional features. The "Actus" was exclusively intended for the Japanese domestic market (JDM) and was never officially distributed outside Japan – making it one of the most sought-after vintage Seiko variants among collectors in Western markets. The additional designation "SS" on the dial refers to the "Special Sport" or "Super Sport" variant within the Actus family, distinguishing it from the simpler Actus models.
The 6106 caliber is a remarkably sophisticated construction: 23 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour, bidirectional automatic winding, full quickset mechanism for day and date (either date only or day and date adjustable by different crown pressure depths), hacking seconds, and a bilingual day wheel in English and Japanese Kanji – in the currently visible example showing "金" (kin, Friday) along with the date 12. This bilingual day-wheel is one of the most distinctive and highly valued features of JDM Actus models among collectors, and a direct reference to its exclusive designation for the Japanese market.
A particularly interesting technical connection: The 6106C caliber shares its basic architecture with the Grand Seiko 61-Series caliber (61GS) – that legendary Grand Seiko automatic movement of the late 1960s and 1970s, which represents one of the most important building blocks in Grand Seiko's history. The Actus is therefore not a distant relative, but the mechanically immediate "cousin" of a Grand Seiko automatic – at a fraction of the Grand Seiko price. In the context of the historical Daini vs. Suwa rivalry, it should be mentioned that the Seiko 5 Actus was produced in both Seiko manufactories – both at Suwa Seikosha and at Daini Seikosha – and thus uniquely combines the best of both manufactories. The variant presented here with the "S"-lightning logo below the "23 Jewels" inscription refers to Suwa Seikosha production and thus to the direct technological lineage to the Grand Seiko 61GS.
The case design of Ref. 6106-8420 follows Seiko's unmistakable late 1960s/early 1970s design language: a distinctive tonneau/cushion case with sharply angled polished flanks and a brushed top, short, integrated lugs, and a strikingly curved, almost sculptural case contour. In collector terminology, this format is often referred to as an "UFO case" – an affectionate reference to the futuristic, almost science-fiction-like appearance of this design, which at the time reflected the spirit of space-age optimism. With a diameter of 37 mm, a height of 11 mm, and a lug-to-lug of 43.2 mm, the watch wears very balanced even by today's standards.
The silver sunburst dial features applied, faceted baton indices with black central sections, the distinctively embossed "SEIKO", "5 ACTUS", and "SS" logos, and the "23 JEWELS" inscription with the characteristic Suwa lightning logo. The centrally arranged polished baton hour and minute hands, as well as the slim seconds hand, have black central surfaces for better contrast. The day-date window at 3 o'clock is executed in the typical Seiko size and arrangement.
A note on model references: On the case back, the reference "STAINLESS STEEL 6106-8420 WATERPROOF" is embossed with the Suwa logo, the movement number 0N1233, and the marking "JAPAN A". The dial code at the bottom of the dial, however, reads "JAPAN 6106-8440T". This slight discrepancy between case and dial code is not uncommon within the 5-Actus family: Seiko regularly used the same dials across various closely related case references in this model series, and the 8420 and 8440 case references are technically and aesthetically closely related. A dial change during the service history is also conceivable; in any case, both components are original Seiko 5 Actus parts from the same movement series and not foreign parts.
Based on the movement number 0Nxxxx, the production date can be clearly determined: the leading "0" stands for a year ending in 0, and "N" for the month of November. Since the 6106 caliber was produced from 1967 to the mid-1970s, only November 1970 is possible – meaning the watch comes from the middle, mature production phase of the 5-Actus family.
Service and technical condition: This watch underwent a complete professional overhaul in Japan in January 2026 – the more than 55-year-old mechanism was completely disassembled, all components ultrasonically cleaned, worn parts replaced, the movement re-oiled, and regulated for accuracy and amplitude. A Japanese full overhaul is the most solid form of movement reconditioning for vintage Seiko calibers, as both the specific spare parts and the movement-specific know-how are most readily available there. The watch runs accordingly precisely and reliably.
Scope of delivery: The watch comes with a new, handcrafted premium leather strap from the traditional manufacturer Pebro (RRP €59.00) in deep black with subtle white contrast stitching and a stainless steel pin buckle, strap width 18 mm. Pebro manufactures its straps with European craftsmanship quality and is known in the upscale vintage watch segment for its robustness, wearing comfort, and clean stitching – a noticeably higher quality solution than the typical no-name leather straps often found on vintage Seikos, and ideally matched in color and style to the silver sunburst dial and polished case flanks.
Condition: The case shows clearly visible signs of wear and use appropriate for its 55-year age – fine scratches and slight polishing marks on the polished flanks and bezel, but no deep damage or pressure marks. The dial is clean and evenly preserved; the applied indices are complete and sharp; the original hands are in good condition; the original crown functions perfectly. The movement runs – as described above – reliably and precisely after a fresh Japanese full overhaul (January 2026).
Overall, a collectors' attractive vintage Seiko from the forefront of the "affordable Vintage Japan" world – with genuine Grand Seiko kinship in the movement, JDM exclusivity, bilingual day-wheel, the characteristic UFO design, and a freshly overhauled, ready-to-wear movement status.
