This Seiko Lady Sports Automatic Hi-Beat Ref. 2205-0691 is a wonderfully preserved and freshly serviced example of one of the most charming women's watch lines from the heyday of Japanese watchmaking, which is increasingly attracting attention from collectors – a piece that translates Seiko's technical ambition of the early and mid-1970s into the delicate format of an elegant ladies' watch.

With the "Lady Sports" line, Seiko created a deliberately independent family of women's watches in 1971, which explicitly rejected the common assumption of that time that women's watches had to be pure jewelry without serious mechanical substance. The advertising slogan of the premiere campaign was "Oh! Adventure" – and the accompanying message to Japanese Seiko dealers in May 1971 explicitly referred to a new generation of active, sport- and freedom-oriented young women, to whom Seiko wanted to offer watches with the same technical quality as those for men. The Lady Sports family included both sporty models (among them the now highly coveted 150m "Baby" women's divers of references 2205-0440 and 2205-0760, which are considered smaller sisters of the famous Seiko Divers 6105 and 6309) as well as more elegant dress variants such as the present Ref. 2205-0691.

Inside, the Seiko caliber 2205A works – a sophisticated, miniaturized automatic movement from the Daini Seikosha manufacture (one of the two main Seiko factories alongside Suwa Seikosha; the Daini tradition had previously included most King Seiko models). The 2205A beats at a remarkably high 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour, qualifying it as a true "Hi-Beat" caliber. This high frequency – by no means standard at the time, but a technical statement – ensures a particularly smooth, even sweep of the seconds hand and significantly improved regulating stability compared to the usual 18,000 or 21,600 semi-oscillation movements. In addition: unlike the later mass-produced caliber 7009, the 2205A features genuine manual winding – a practical advantage for ladies' watches, which are usually not worn frequently enough for the automatic winding to keep the movement running continuously. The quickset function for the date at three o'clock completes the movement, making it a high-quality, everyday-suitable construction for its time. With 17 jewels, the present variant is the solid basic version; depending on the reference, the 2205 was also offered in 21 or 23-jewel versions.

The case presents itself in the classic Lady Sports format: 25 mm diameter, a compact height of 11.1 mm, and a remarkably short lug-to-lug of only 33.5 mm. These proportions were standard for women's wristwatches in the 1970s and have been significantly gaining value in the collector's market for several years – in the wake of the general renaissance of compact watch formats. The vertically finely brushed silver-colored dial with applied, darkly oxidized baton indices, subtle minute markers, and the characteristic red "30" in the date window perfectly encapsulates the functional design of the early 1970s: technical, clear, without ornamental accents. The markings "SEIKO – AUTOMATIC – 17 JEWELS" as well as the Daini-Seikosha signature in the form of the characteristic lightning bolt symbol confirm its affiliation with the Daini line.

Based on the serial number 612708, the production date can be precisely determined: The leading "6" stands for a year ending in 6, the "1" for the month of January. Since the caliber 2205A was only produced from 1970 to 1980, only January 1976 is possible – meaning the watch comes from the mature middle production phase of this caliber. The "2708" is the consecutive production number of this case type in that month.

This example was fully serviced by a specialist watchmaker in Japan in January 2026 and runs accordingly precisely and reliably. The non-original steel bracelet has been replaced – instead, the watch wears a high-quality "Beads of Rice" stainless steel bracelet from the Japanese bracelet manufacturer Bambi. Bambi (バンビ, founded in 1930 in Tokyo) is Japan's most traditional specialist for watch bracelets and enjoys a similar reputation in its home market as the European premium leather bracelet manufacturers. Bambi bracelets have been used by Seiko, Citizen, Casio, and numerous independent watchmakers for both OEM and aftermarket applications for decades. The "Beads of Rice" link used here is a classic design motif of the 1960s and 1970s, characterized by the oval center links between flat outer links – a variant of the so-called "rice grain" bracelet that visually perfectly matches the period-typical elegance of the Lady Sports and is ideally adapted to the finer lug width of a ladies' watch.

Overall, a strong-character, technically sophisticated vintage Seiko for women with a Hi-Beat movement from the Daini manufacture, in impeccable wearable condition after a complete overhaul and with a high-quality Japanese bracelet component.
