Aizu Urushi – 9000 Years of Japanese Lacquer Tradition

Aizu Urushi is one of Japan's oldest and most renowned lacquer techniques. Originating from the snowy Aizu region, this art form boasts a history spanning over 9000 years.

Tamamushi-nuri – Shimmering Depth through Silver Powder

Tamamushi-nuri (玉虫塗) is one of the most fascinating Aizu-Urushi techniques. It creates a lustrous, deep-effect surface that shimmers depending on the light.

The effect is achieved through a special layering process:
– First, the base is built up with Urushi
– Finest silver powder is incorporated into the middle layer
– This is followed by further layers of clear Urushi

The challenge lies in the perfect interplay of temperature, humidity, and the lacquer master's experience.
The silver powder initially creates a grainy texture, which is then polished smooth by hand until the surface gleams evenly and the depth of the layers becomes visible.

Tamamushi-nuri is a brilliant example of traditional Aizu art – technically demanding, visually extraordinary, and unique in every respect.

The Dream Pen Aizu Urushi Tamamushi-nuri is made from ABS and built up with numerous layers of Urushi.
Each layer is carefully applied, dried, polished, and refined again – a process that takes weeks and demands the highest precision.
