Aizu Urushi – 9000 years of Japanese lacquer tradition

Aizu Urushi is one of Japan's oldest and most renowned lacquer techniques. Originating from the snowy Aizu region, this art form boasts a history of over 9000 years.
In the Dream Pen Collection, Wancher presents four characteristic Aizu techniques:
– Akebono-nuri
– Koma-nuri
– Metallic Nashiji
– Tamamushi-nuri

Each technique possesses its own aesthetic, depth, and artisanal complexity.

Tamamushi-nuri – Shimmering depth through silver powder

Tamamushi-nuri (玉虫塗) is one of the most fascinating Aizu-Urushi techniques. It creates a glossy, deep surface that shimmers depending on the light.

The effect is created by a special layering:
– First, the base is built up with Urushi
– Finest silver powder is incorporated into the middle layer
– This is followed by further layers of clear Urushi

The challenge lies in the perfect interplay of temperature, humidity, and the lacquer master's experience.
The silver powder initially creates a granular structure, which is then hand-polished smooth until the surface shines evenly and the depth of the layers becomes visible.

Tamamushi-nuri is a brilliant example of traditional Aizu art – technically demanding, optically exceptional, and unique in every respect.

Design & Craftsmanship

The Dream Pen Aizu Urushi Tamamushi-nuri is made of ABS and built up in numerous layers with Urushi.
Each layer is carefully applied, dried, polished, and refined again – a process that takes weeks and demands the highest precision.

The result is a surface with iridescent sheen, organic depth, and a distinctive radiance.
