The Dream Watch – Urushi Purple Kindai Maki-e "Aka Fuji" combines Japanese lacquer art with modern watchmaking. The deep purple Urushi dial is built up in many thin layers in Echizen, one of Japan's oldest lacquer regions, and polished by hand. On it, the "Aka Fuji" motif unfolds using the Kindai-Maki-e technique: the glowing red Fuji above gold-framed waves, with stylized clouds, sun, and a single cherry blossom – a classic motif of Japanese art, reinterpreted on a watch dial.

A special feature of this unique piece is the "Red Ororu" case: The iridescent coating shimmers between violet, red, and rainbow tones depending on the light, reflecting the color palette of the dial. The black leather strap provides a calm counterpoint.

What is Maki-e?

Maki-e (蒔絵, "sprinkled picture") is a Japanese lacquer art over 1,200 years old: a motif is drawn into still-wet Urushi lacquer, onto which the finest gold or silver powder is sprinkled before the lacquer hardens. From the Nara period (710–794) through the imperial court of the Heian period to the samurai culture of the Edo period, the technique was constantly refined – on sword fittings, lacquer boxes, and personal objects of extraordinary beauty.

In Kindai Maki-e (近代蒔絵, "modern Maki-e"), this tradition meets contemporary manufacturing: The motif is digitally designed and transferred to the handcrafted Urushi surface using a high-quality screen printing process. This combines the depth and warmth of real Urushi lacquer with precise, modern motif design.
