Wancher Kuretake Kindai Maki-e - Shunshoku Banri

Shunshoku Banri is based on a historical textile motif, originally discovered on an offering cloth from the southern area of the Shōsōin Treasury. The design features a lotus-like flower seat, embedded in a richly blooming floral tree – an elaborate arrangement that reflects the aesthetics and craftsmanship of the era.

Through the modern Kindai Maki-e technique, this ancient motif is reinterpreted with exceptional precision and luminosity. The colors are vibrant, the lines clear, the composition harmonious – a piece of Japanese cultural history, captured in a fountain pen.

Wancher × Kuretake – A Tribute to Japanese Art

Together with Kuretake, Wancher presents a collection of 18 Kindai Maki-e designs that showcase Japanese symbols, culture, and folklore in a modern form. Each fountain pen combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary technique – a writing instrument that tells stories and conveys emotions.

The nib and clip are consciously designed as part of the overall concept to complete the artistic statement. With sincere dedication, a fountain pen is created that is suitable for both daily use and as a special gift.

Kindai Maki-e & Ukiyo-e – Inspiration from Classical Art

The Kindai Maki-e technique is based on the aesthetics of classical Ukiyo-e, a traditional Japanese print art. Both techniques work with stencils, layers of color, and the principle of permanently transferring an image onto a surface.

Ukiyo-e even influenced European artists like Vincent van Gogh in the 19th century – and this connection between tradition and modernity is also reflected in the Maki-e Monogatari collection.

Design – Rimpa Influences & Nature Motifs

The design of the Maki-e Monogatari models is inspired by the Rimpa school of the 17th century. Typical elements include natural elements such as flowers, trees, mountains, and animals – motifs deeply rooted in Japanese painting tradition.

Shunshoku Banri takes up this tradition and combines it with a historical pattern from the Shōsōin Treasury – a rare interplay of history, symbolism, and modern art.

The Maki-e Monogatari Fountain Pen – Manufacturing

The fountain pen has a surprisingly light, slender yet robust body. The seamless aluminum casing allows the Maki-e drawing to be displayed without interruption.

The barrel is formed from a single piece of aluminum using the press drawing process – a process that requires precision, strength, and experience. Barrel and cap are created by controlled deep drawing of the metal, resulting in a durable, perfectly balanced writing instrument.

Shape & Handling

The bullet-shaped silhouette sits comfortably in the hand, is compact, and ideal for daily use. The nib sizes F, M, and the SHARA-Q Fude tip offer versatile writing styles. Compatible with all Kuretake nibs.
