The “true” GMT function

The 9075 movement by Citizen's Miyota factory, newly released in 2022 and used in this watch, is nothing short of a sensation. While the "true" GMT function was previously mostly reserved for expensive luxury watches, this new movement brings the function to unprecedented price ranges.

But what exactly is a "true" GMT function and why is it so sought after and valued? First, let's look at the GMT function as such: a regular three-hand watch is supplemented by a fourth hand that moves across a 24-hour scale. In this way, two time zones can be read on the watch: home time and local time.

The "true" GMT function is characterized by the fact that the main hour hand can be set in one-hour increments by pulling the crown to the first position. Imagine sitting on a plane for seven hours and disembarking in a foreign time zone. Crown to position 1, set the main hour hand to local time, done. You are now wearing a timepiece on your wrist that displays local time, while the 24-hour GMT hand continues to display the time at your home location. The watch for true travelers! Hence the name "true" GMT or "flyer" GMT.

In contrast, there are mechanical GMT movements where not the main hour hand but the smaller GMT hand can be adjusted in increments. This function is useful if, for example, you often call people in distant countries for work, which is why this functionality is called "caller" or "office" GMT.
